Associate Director - Finance in M&A, Integration and Separation

The Role

You will gain exposure to the high pressure, fast-paced world of transactions through delivering operational finance integration and separation projects.

You will be responsible for leading Finance in M&A related business development, client delivery and practice development for the Finance in M&A team.

Roles & Responsibilities

Business development:

• To work collaborative with the Finance in M&A partner and fellow directors, as well as the wider I&S and DA partners and directors to pursue and land deal opportunities. Our team truly believes in the success of ‘hunting in packs’. We land more deals and bigger deals by working together across I&S/DA and across borders, e.g. with our US colleagues.
• To bring a compelling and differentiating Finance in M&A solutions to our clients deal challenges, and to demonstrate the breadth and depth of our experience in advising and supporting our clients to successfully pursue and execute on complex deals.
• To scope, price, resource winning proposals and engagements.
• To build and expand client relationships on large corporates, making us the trusted advisors from one deal to the next.
• To market and create leads for our Finance in M&A work internally within KPMG as well as externally in the marketplace.
• To identify and pull through relevant KPMG services, e.g. Management Consulting, Accounting advisory, Tax advisory etc.

Client delivery:

• Scope, plan and lead the delivery of Finance in M&A engagements from pre-deal Finance Function reviews to in-deal execution whether separations, integrations or JVs.
• Assisting CFOs and finance stakeholders on the buy-side or sell-side to plan and execute changes in the finance organisation as required by the transaction. This will be across the deal cycle from pre-deal to post-deal phases of the transaction.
• Manage the risks and successful delivery of Finance in M&A projects, including exceeding client expectations, managing the team and delivering on the commercial commitments.
• Leading, advising and challenging our Finance in M&A team to support our clients through Finance Function deal strategy development, organisational design, process transitions, reporting development/alignment and synergy/cost analysis programmes arising from acquisitions, divestitures, carve outs and other transactions.
• Drawing on knowledge and experience of Finance in deals to provide high quality and deep insights, advice and challenge to our senior clients.
• Interfacing with senior internal and external stakeholders both at clients and within KPMG.
• Growing and managing relationships with key client C level executives.
• Being accountable for engagement management including quality and risk management for the project.

People and Practice development:

• Be a key driver and contributor to the strategy and growth plans of our Finance in M&A business
• Be a part of the practice leadership team, e.g. guiding team members to manage the practice commercials, pipeline and resourcing processes.
• Coaching, stretching and mentoring team members within Finance in M&A and wider I&S team
• Drive digital innovation including the development of compelling Finance in M&A propositions to differentiate us from our competitors and to provide market growth opportunities for the practice.
• Further growing our relationships with other member firms, e.g. US Finance in M&A to provide a platform for further global opportunities and growth.

Candidates will be expected to have as a minimum the following skills and experience:

• Background in Finance Focused Management Consulting or an operational finance role in industry.
• Strong business development track record
• Ability to shape and sell complex Finance solutions to large corporate clients
• Track record in collaborating across different areas of KPMG to shape, sell and deliver complex client engagements
• Ability to build deep senior level client relationships, and be a trusted client advisor
• Professional qualification preferred (ACA, CIMA, MBA or equivalent).
• Operational finance experience could include activities such as planning, budgeting and forecasting, finance business partnering, management reporting, ERP systems implementation, cash management or design and operation of core end-to-end processes (Record to Report, Procure to Pay, Order to Cash etc.).
• Strong understanding of the component parts of a finance function and the typical organisational structure, processes, controls, systems and performance metrics/ benchmarks.
• Strong knowledge and understanding of core finance processes.
• Extensive knowledge of current leading practice and future trends in creating efficient and effective finance functions, including supporting business strategy, operating model design and implementation, disruptive technologies and creating insight from data.
• Exposure to the operational finance issues created by finance integrations, separations and carve outs.
• Significant experience of leading finance change projects and business improvement initiatives in industry or a consulting environment.
• Experience of organisational change in finance/ back office functions.
• Extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions.
• An understanding of the market drivers, challenges and opportunities impacting our client’s strategies and priorities, enabling them to position solutions and ideas which take these into account.
• Possess a genuine interest in building and commercialising relationships having the ability to interact with our clients on a consultative manner as a trusted advisor.
• Demonstrate curiosity and innovation, striving for continuous improvement, exercising professional judgement and making a positive and lasting impact.
• Commitment and ambition to develop personally and professionally to achieve their full potential, acting as a role model, coach and colleague to other team members.
• Individuals should be comfortable working in the high pressured yet often ambiguous and flexible conditions that characterise transactions.
• You will need to be willing to travel as we mainly work from client sites and have a global portfolio of clients. The length of a project can be anywhere from one week to one year, although a typical project will last a few weeks and we would aim to give you as diverse an experience as possible
