Service Operations Manager





R ole Synopsis:

The Configuration Manager supports the Service Management Office function within IT Services Operations.

The role is responsible for introducing best practice Configuration Management, based on ITIL principles, to the Firm.

Once introduced successfully, the Configuration Manager, will be accountable for the on-going success and measurement of the process.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate good broad technical knowledge, to a level where they can challenge and support technical decisions being made by their team.

The role is not expected to be an SME across all services; the deep technical knowledge will reside within the teams.

The role is also responsible for managing the relationship of this team, providing support and assignment of resource into projects to ensure adequate skills and knowledge are applied to delivery and transition into an operational state.

The role reports to the Service Operations Manager.

Key Accountabilities:

Primary responsibilities include:


Production and maintenance of the Configuration Plan to include strategy, policy and scope.


Implementation of the Configuration Management Plan, running associated projects to ensure that Configuration Management and its process are effectively implemented.


Perform awareness campaigns to achieve support for Configuration Management as it underpins the overall Service Management process.


Control of the CMDB, ensuring that CI’s are only added, modified, replaced or removed with appropriate controlling documentation, working closely with Change Management to ensure that this occurs.


Produce regular management reports that show that status of the CMDB in terms of completeness, consistency and discrepancies identified.


Report on all CI’s through their complete life-cycle.


Define the Configuration Management KPI’s and ensure that KPI targets are met.


Undertake reviews and audits to verify that CI’s are correctly recorded in the CMDB and physically exist.


Close liaison with the other Service Management process owners to ensure that the content of the CMDB is accurate and meets their needs.


Work closely with 3rd party suppliers to ensure that configuration data relevant is maintained in the CMDB.


Ensure that the CMDB tool is customised effectively to meet the needs of Service Management.


Undertake regular house-keeping of the CMDB.

Essential Criteria:



ITIL Certified


Significant experience in a support function relevant to the role and significant direct experience in a Configuration Management role


Good communication skills (verbal and written)


Excellent reasoning and influencing skills


Ability to work closely with support groups, suppliers and customers



Experience of implementing a Configuration Management function


IT related Degree


Experience in Service Now, Discover and Service Watch


Previous involvement with third party supplier
