The Role

The Tax Assistant role is a tax compliance role within the UK Partnership Tax team and will report through to the Head of UK Partnership Tax.

The Partnership Tax team within KPMG Business Services (KBS) is responsible for the tax affairs of the UK group and also responsible for dealing with a number of overseas tax obligations. The role will involve working with members of the tax team and some work with the finance team and wider parts of the firm.

The Responsibilities

Assistance with the preparation of the tax computations of KPMG LLP, and various companies in the KPMG corporate group.

This will involve:

• Analysis of data from a tax perspective, including reconciliation of accounting entries, from various KPMG systems, including SAP, Concur, E-Payables etc;
• Working closely with various other departments in order to obtain information required to prepare the tax computations;
• Preparation of various tax schedules to be included in the partnership tax computation for submission to HMRC;
• Preparing tax computations and updating and finalising tax computations for KPMG’s UK tax resident corporate entities and permanent establishments;
• Researching technical issues and preparing notes and reports for senior members of the team or firm on tax technical issues relating to the tax computations;
• Preparation of the partnership tax returns and corporate tax returns using Digita and Alphatax software;
• Reviewing and independently checking tax schedules and computations prepared by other team members.
• Updating internal control records and group structure information

Responsibilities around tax payments include:
• Assisting with calculating quarterly instalment and annual corporate tax payments;
• Providing instructions for payment to accounts payable and ensuring payments are made to HMRC; and
• Reviewing and updating year end quarterly instalment tax closure notices.
• Assisting with ongoing data analysis relating to KPMG’s wider tax affairs, for example, overseas tax filing requirements and Country by Country reporting.
• Assisting with Senior Accounting Officer requirements, including the preparation and review and updating of processes (and process notes) used to extract data from the SAP system and other sources and documenting the processes surrounding the preparation of the tax computation.
• Assisting with gathering information required for responses to HMRC enquiries.
• Assisting with the preparation of the estimated year end taxable profits figure and deferred tax calculation for KPMG LLP.
• Handling other ad hoc tasks and projects as required.
• Coaching and mentoring junior team members.

The Person – Skills & Qualifications

The successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate the following skills and qualifications:
• ATT or CTA (part or fully qualified)
• Experience in a corporate tax compliance department or dealing with corporate tax issues is required. Knowledge of basic partnership tax issues would be helpful but is not essential.
• Basic accounting knowledge and experience and awareness of accounting standards.
• Able to work well in a team environment. The ability to communicate effectively with peers, senior and junior team members is essential.
• Able to extract, assimilate and analyse information quickly and accurately.
• A sound knowledge of excel and the ability to adapt speedily to in-house systems (e.g., SAP).
• Willingness to handle large volumes of detailed information, an investigative nature and ability to get things right.
• Respect for confidential information.
• Self-starter, good organisational skills are essential but also the ability to recognise when to ask for advice.

The role will involve working as part of a team - training, supervision and coaching will be provided.
