The Department

This specialised and growing department of professional staff provides M&A tax services to Financial Services clients across a range of major listed international groups, UK groups, overseas financial institutions and smaller owner-managed businesses. We advise companies throughout the financial services industry including banks, securities dealers, general and life insurers, funds and fund managers, as well as a growing base of Private Equity clients who are focused on the acquisition of financial services targets and assets.

The department focuses on the provision of high quality transactional advice to our clients, often as part of a wider transaction team across the advisory and tax practices. Our approach has as its foundation a thorough understanding of our client's business strategy as well as the industry in which they operate. This enables us to work in partnership with them and to provide tailored and robust tax solutions to support their corporate goals.

The Sector

In the Financial Sector M&A area, transaction/deal volume is increasing. There is a rapidly growing opportunity for involvement on a broader range of transactions within the FS space.
Recent trends in this market suggest:

Major banks are continuing to divest non-core assets.
Private equity houses are continuing to grow their presence in the FS sector in targeting acquisitions of distressed asset portfolios, non-core asset disposals, and strategic takeovers of FS growth platforms (such as asset management, loan portfolio platforms, and distribution platforms).
These factors point to a continued increase in transaction/deal activity and of significant opportunities to pursue.


The role involves the following responsibilities:
Project managing major transactional assignments, seeing the process through from investigation to implementation, ensuring transactional work is managed and delivered effectively;
Managing relationships with all stakeholders, including the client, other parts of the KPMG Deal Advisory practice, other contacts in KPMG, and FS M&A team members; becoming the focal tax point of contact;
Understanding the client's business and commercial strategy in entering into the proposed transactions;
Carrying out detailed technical research in a variety of areas affecting the proposed transactions, if required by the situation;
Managing teams, delegating, coaching and developing staff;
Managing net sales in the region of £1 million in year one as Senior Manager;
Identifying and driving forward new opportunities on existing clients for FS M&A as well as pursuing key targets.

Success will be measured on how well the candidate: frees-up partners and directors from involvement in transaction delivery; develops inter-firm relationships; identifies new opportunities; and develops junior staff in their technical and career development.

The Individual

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate:
A broad skillset, including: M&A experience (specifically, Financial Sector M&A experience), and working knowledge of and experience in the Financial Sector;
Ability to perform at senior manager level (i.e. self-starting with minimal partner/director guidance, able to originate and pursue new Financial Sector client accounts, able to coordinate and lead internal delegate teams on transactional work);
Possession of sound judgement, including the ability to identify and evaluate risk issues, and knowing when to involve others;
A track record of leading delivery of projects, with a focus on high quality and timely delivery;
Commitment to business development (e.g. sourcing cross-service line opportunities; and developing opportunities with “cold” targets);
Ability to communicate effectively at all levels (internally and externally) and be a team player; strong interpersonal skills are required in addition to strong oral and written communication skills;
High level analytical skills and a commercial approach to resolving issues and providing advice; ability to apply knowledge of fundamental tax principles in identifying potential technical issues and opportunities;
Adaptability and dynamism; indications of leadership qualities;
Ability to multi-task and be organised;
Experience of managing a team.

Additional Info/Qualifications

Chartered Tax and/or Chartered Accountancy and/or equivalent legal/HMRC/international qualification is essential.
