The Role


The Project Management (PM) Performance Manager has two roles: 1. to drive improved audit quality by delivering excellence in PM across the Performance Group (PG), and 2. to be an Audit Project Manager (APM), providing excellence in project delivery on any engagement(s) as required by the Performance Group Leader.

Performance Manager

• The will contribute to improved audit quality via four main levers: excellence in Project Management, Finance, Resourcing and People
• Performance Managers will be high performing Senior Managers, who allocate their time between managing performance and Project Managing significant audit(s)
• Line manage up to 9 APM colleagues at C grade
• Leverage the local support functions, Finance, Resource Management, HRBPs, Recruitment and also Performance Managers to deliver their outputs
• The Performance Manager’s reporting line will be to the partners that lead their community. Performance Managers also play an important role in implementing and managing PM across the Group, and delivering regular MI to the Centre; and therefore will have a dual reporting line to the PM Lead.

Audit Project Manager (APM)

• Provide leadership, guidance and innovation in the day-to-day running of KPMG engagements. To establish, run and evolve the team’s core capabilities that focus around excellence in project delivery and assurance.
• Working with a PMO, facilitate delivery of the engagement, and provide project support and data analysis to support management decision making and communication.
• Provide ad-hoc quality assurance to ensure work is executed in accordance with agreed objectives, and conduct reporting to ensure the various workstreams are on track.
• To line manage any assigned administrative staff. This will include imparting knowledge, skills and experience to support career development/coaching of team members and provision of best practice. The APM will support change and adoption of new ways of working.

The role needs to be able to respond to changing priorities and be able to respond to changes in business needs in a dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities include

People


• With the Group leader, People Partner, Group COO, and PM Lead, take responsibility for the engagement and culture of the APMs in the Group
• With the PM Lead, to drive excellence in project management in the PG, standardised across the whole of Audit
• With the HR Business Partner, run effective and efficient people calendar activities for the APMs including performance development annual activity, talent reviews, promotion cycles & reward
• With group COO, develop a high performing community of APMs, supporting them to manage their careers and ensure retention
• Drive an inclusive culture in their Group
• With Learning Business Partners, ensure coherence with the strategic priorities of the Group
• Support the recruitment process to ensure timely filling of vacancies (internal & external)

Resourcing

• Through Headcount Planning and Talent Reviews, have a deep understanding of their team’s capabilities and skills, to support resourcing, mobility & learning decisions
• Working with Resource Management, ensure engagements are resourced in line with strategic priorities for the client and development needs of people
• Actively work with Partners, Resourcing and HR to ensure talent flows across the business to meet hot spots and address development needs
• Embed Knowledge Management best practice, capturing and sharing information and promoting KM tools to improve our understanding of our wins
• Drive improved utilisation of KGS

Finance

• Working closely with the COO and PM Lead to manage the cost base of their team
• Accountable for improving key financial metrics for their team, as agreed with group COO
Audit Project Management
• Ensuring audit quality and risk are the primary considerations in the planning and allocation of resources
• Developing strong, trusting and credible working relationships with senior staff on engagements, and other key business stakeholders
• Managing resourcing requirements and on-boarding staff for engagements
• Setting project timelines and tracking the team’s progress against those goals
• Hold Audit Managers/Senior Managers to account for the delivery of their audits
• Working with Performance Leaders and Audit Managers, co-ordinate activities on the planning and delivery of audits to optimise use of resources including KGS and ensure KPMG requirements and deadlines are achieved
• Ensuring effective audit governance through the regular reporting of audit progress, achievement of milestones, instigation of change control processes, and management of delivery risks/issues
• Ensuring KPMG’s commercial processes are being effectively managed, including over-runs
• Providing Project Management coaching support within the team
• Identification and tracking of interdependencies
• Implementation of relevant systems and tools to support the delivery of work for the engagement
• Providing and organising quality assurance reviews and health checks to ensure work is being undertaken to a sufficiently high standard
• Working with Finance to manage fees and billing
• Supporting tools to manage client data and data requests
• Line management responsibilities for administrative staff within the team including: objective setting, performance management, guidance and support, specific coaching

The Person


Essential requirements:

• Proven and dynamic senior leader and manager capable of managing the other APMs and the PMO.
• Strong interpersonal skills and credibility, plus an ability to work positively with and influence a wide range of individuals and stakeholders
• Fluent written and oral English communications skills
• Clear expertise in project and programme management, and also planning, monitoring, data analysis, and reporting - including risk management
• Good understanding of the audit quality objectives
• Proven coaching skills
• Able to create effective business plans and business cases
• Experience of budgeting and resource allocation procedures
• Driven and enthusiastic, with a ‘can-do’ attitude and an ability to get the job done in a practical and pragmatic fashion without upsetting others
• Innovative problem solver with a pragmatic and tenacious approach
• Degree level in a business related subject or equivalent

Desirable

• Demonstrable PMO expertise plus an ability to maintain a high quality BAU service
• Experience of working in a Professional Services environment
• Experience of line managing a number of project professionals
• Experience of various project and programme management approaches
• Recognised professional accreditation in Project Management
• Experience in using Microsoft Project
