Senior Manager - External Affairs

KPMG is looking for an experienced government affairs professional with a strong interest in devolved and regional government and policy to join our External Affairs team. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to lead the firm’s regional engagement and policy work, drawing on KPMG’s network of offices across the country, as well as support the firm’s external affairs strategy more widely.

This position can be based from any of our UK offices.

Role and responsibilities

Political engagement:
- Lead and manage the firm’s engagement with key political stakeholders, with a particular focus on regional bodies and devolved administrations.
- Develop strong internal and external stakeholder networks to support the firm’s commercial priorities, including in Westminster and with Combined Authorities and devolved administrations.
- Build strong working relationships with officials and advisers in regional decision-making bodies, as well as the wider business community including via LEPs.
- Represent the firm at roundtables and events to promote KPMG’s priorities and public policy thought leadership.
- Share intelligence gained from political engagement with colleagues within External Affairs to support the firm’s wider political insights function.
- Manage and mentor junior staff who support the firm’s wider political engagement strategies, including in relation to stakeholder mapping.Advice to senior leadership
- Work collaboratively with the regional leadership to support their wider growth strategies across key regions of the UK.
- Create a plan for senior colleagues to engage with senior decision makers within central and local government, to complement the firm’s wider political stakeholder engagement plan.
- Brief regional and wider leadership on public policy issues ahead of stakeholder meetings, events and speaking slots, including those that sit on regional trade body forums.
- Regularly attend regional client ‘leaders circle’ discussions to demonstrate our insights on government policy and how it impacts specific regions.
- Work closely with other colleagues within Corporate Affairs – including our regional Media Relations leads – to ensure we maintain a strong public voice on key policy issues.
- Advise on, and participate in, KPMG podcasts and webinars on major political developments.
- Assess thought leadership from senior colleagues from across the firm for wider political risks.
Influence regional policy
- Establish an External Affairs strategy for influencing government policy affecting the UK’s regions, including in relation to the ‘levelling up’ agenda, devolution and regional growth.
- Monitor and research relevant public policy interventions and developments and advise on any KPMG response.
- Work closely with the firm’s leadership team in Scotland to identify commercial opportunities arising from Scottish government policy developments.
- Facilitate relevant partnerships and collaborations – including events, programmes and campaigns – which help to strengthen KPMG’s contribution to regional policy development.Skills, knowledge and experience

The ideal candidate will have:
- Extensive experience in a political, public policy or public affairs environment.
- Direct experience of engaging with senior political stakeholders at a national, regional and devolved level.
- A deep understanding of the policy and political landscape in the UK across all levels of government, including in relation to regional and devolved administrations.
- Ability to drive strong stakeholder engagement and develop multi-stakeholder initiatives.
- The ability to engage directly with the firm’s senior leadership and their support teams.
- Strong interpersonal and presentation skills; ability to display tact and diplomacy.
- High quality writing and analytical skills, and the ability to write both strategically and creatively under tight deadlines.
- Some experience of a commercial environment - preferably in a range of sectors - and experience in the interaction between an external affairs function and a commercial function.
- Strong attention to detail, a diligent approach and good judgement.
- Willingness to conduct regular travel across the UK.
