Principal Business Analyst

The Business Analysis (BA) function within KPMG ensures that business needs are discovered, defined, articulated and recorded as part of a wider project/programme delivery team.

The role of the Principal BA is to ensure that the BA capability supports the business and technology functions within KPMG to ensure that the firm can execute projects and programmes to achieve its primary goals. The Principal BA must therefore have a strong understanding of a wide range of BA tools, techniques and principles, and how these may be applied to projects. The Principal BA must also develop strategy, frameworks and tooling to ensure consistent and successful engagements with the wider business; The Principal BA must also manage a team of BAs to ensure these are applied and to ensure the team produce high-quality outputs to agreed timelines.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and Develop Team
- Manage and lead the Business Analysis team on a day-to-day basis
- Set clear objectives and goals
- Find the right balance between direction and autonomy, e.g. develop an understanding of when to insist on pace and/or quality vs. allowing team members to discover and experience things for themselves
- Provide coaching to junior members of the team
Core Knowledge
- Maintain a high level of knowledge in core areas including Business Analysis techniques
- Maintain an good level of technical knowledge incl. current, emerging and future technology market trends and their impact on the business
- Develop and maintain a knowledge of KPMG’s technology ecosystem, incl. the main applications and technologies that support KPMG’s Capabilities, e.g. Tax, Audit, etc.
- If required, provide advice to and/or seek to learn from other Member Firms, client teams and/or clients that are seeking to implement or improve their use of specific Business Architecture methods or frameworks
Core Tasks
- Manage capacity and utilisation of the BA team
- Reporting and escalation capacity, utilisation, team challenges etc to the Head of Business Architecture and Analysis
- Define and own the BA strategy on behalf of the Head of Business Architecture and Analysis
- Define, monitor and refine Business Analyst standards, approaches and assets.
- Build strong working relationships with individuals inside the wider Strategy and Architecture team, i.e. solution business and enterprise architecture teams, and Human-Centred Design.
- Build close working relationships with individuals and teams outside of the Strategy and Architecture team, e.g. PMO and delivery CoEs.
- Ensure that the BA team is flexible and responsive to business and project need whilst maintaining quality and adherence to standards
- Lead BA activities on significant projectsTechnology Governance
- As required, assess maturity and effectiveness of Business Analysis activities performed by other parts of the firm
Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential (Business Analysis)
- Proven track record and experience of Business Analysis, incl. strategies, formal requirements definition, working with Human-Centred Design teams & procurement.
- An understanding of design thinking, value stream mapping, customer profiles and journeys, KPIs, risk and control frameworks, and KRIs
- Extensive experience in Business Analysis with team leadership experience
Essential (Other)
- Experience of working with Agile SDLC (Software Development Lifecycle Management) methods
- Able to explain technical concepts to a non-technical audience in a way that is relevant, easy to consume and compelling
- Good understanding of project management concepts, incl. Gantt charts/plans, risks, assumptions, and dependencies, etc.
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
- Ability to leverage networks in KPMG, e.g. to tap into additional expertise if required
- Comfortable working with ambiguity at the beginning of projects, with ability to provide clarity of direction despite this
- A good level of general technical knowledge incl. current, emerging and future technology market trends and their impact on business
- An understanding of technical debt, incl. its causes, how to measure it, and remedial actions incl. decommissioning
- Knowledge of at least one technology domain, incl. Collaboration & Experience; Automation; Data Science & AI; Data; Integration; Infrastructure / Cloud; Security; and DevSecOps
- Experience of leading offshore teams
