Ethics & Independence Senior Manager - (UK wide location) Fixed Term

Date: Jul 17, 2021

Location: London, United Kingdom

Company: KPMG UK

Please note this role is offered on a 18 month Fixed Term Contract / Secondment basis
Location: Any UK office base location

KPMG is part of a global network of firms that offers Audit, Tax & Pensions, Consulting, Deal Advisory and Technology services. Through the talent of over 16,000 colleagues, we bring our creativity and insight to our clients’ most critical challenges.

With offices across the UK, we work with everyone from small start-ups and individuals to major multinationals, in virtually every industry imaginable. Our work is often complex, yet our vision is simple: to be the clear choice for our clients, for our people and for the communities we work in.

The Ethics and Independence (“E&I”) team is part of KPMG UK’s Central Risk Management department. The E&I team is responsible for developing and deploying appropriate policy, procedure and guidance on Ethics and Independence (firm, personal and service-related) to ensure compliance with regulatory and KPMG International requirements, ensuring an adequate programme of communication and training in respect of those policies and procedures is in place and providing guidance and advice to partners and staff on E&I matters.

The Role
Following the publication of the FRC’s Revised Ethical Standard the relationships we have with a large number of our audit clients are subject to more onerous and complex independence restrictions. It is critical for engagement teams to appropriately consider permissibility of proposed non-audit services and other relationships for our audit clients to ensure compliance with regulation. This is an area of increased regulatory focus and goes right to the heart of KPMG’s Trust & Growth strategy.

In this interesting and challenging environment, the E&I team is looking to recruit a senior manager to lead in the provision of high quality advice to engagement teams.

New matters and issues are always emerging so the role will be varied but responsibilities are likely to include:

- Team consultations – dealing with queries from client facing partners and directors on non-audit services and reviewing and approving formal ethics & independence consultations.
- Independence clearances – taking an SME role with respect to review and sign off of independence clearances for prospective listed (UK PIE) audit clients, supporting engagement teams through this challenging process and providing a valuable contribution to an important part of the audit tender process.
- Sentinel secondary approvals – together with others in the team the individual would take on responsibility for secondary approvals (as a delegate to the E&I Partner) in Sentinel which will involve liaison at the highest levels with audit partners and engagement teams to understand services and ensure documentation is sufficient and threats and safeguards have been adequately documented.
- Projects - taking on the lead for various projects (as they arise) to respond to the regulators feedback and/or to enhance our processes and overall compliance - by using experience gained in the field, providing practical solutions, driving projects forward and maintaining momentum.
- Training/Communication – deciding how best to increase awareness and drafting communications and guidance and delivering training across the whole firm

Skills and Experience

Applicants should be able to demonstrate experience in the following key components of this role:

- Proven ability to build relationships and communicate with people at all levels including Partners
- Strong communication skills – able to question effectively, listen and apply judgement to complex problems and to deliver difficult messages to all grades (including Partners)
- Excellent project management skills to deliver high quality work on time.
- Confident and comfortable to act as a delegate for a Director or Partner where required.
- Possess an eye for detail as well as an ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to take on a high level of responsibility at an early stage.
- Ability to handle sensitive/confidential information appropriately.
- Knowledge of the FRC Revised Ethical Standard and independence rules of other regulators (such as IESBA and SEC) would be beneficial.
