This responsibility includes the need to understand and adhere to member firm policies and associated procedures in carrying out their day-to-day activities. UK Quality & Risk Management teams help to set, implement and enforce policies and procedures designed to help to enable KPMG UK and its personnel to achieve the following key objectives: (i) oversee and monitor service quality, (ii) protect the brand and reputation of KPMG, (iii) comply with laws, (iv) regulations and professional standards, and (v) minimize the risk of financial claims against KPMG UK.

KPMG OverviewKPMG is part of a global network of firms that offers Audit, Tax & Pensions, Consulting, Deal Advisory and Technology services. Through the talent of over 16,000 colleagues, we bring our creativity and insight to our clients’ most critical challenges.

With offices across the UK, we work with everyone from small start-ups and individuals to major multinationals, in virtually every industry imaginable. Our work is often complex, yet our vision is simple: to be the clear choice for our clients, for our people and for the communities we work in.

Job Description
For any internal candidates, we can discuss role location based on the individual’s current office base.

The Ethics and Independence (“E&I”) team is part of KPMG UK’s Central Risk Management department. The E&I team is responsible for developing and deploying appropriate policy, procedure and guidance on Ethics and Independence (firm, personal and service-related) to ensure compliance with regulatory and KPMG International requirements, ensuring an adequate programme of communication and training in respect of those policies and procedures is in place and providing guidance and advice to partners and staff on E&I matters.

The Role

Following the implementation of the EU Audit Reform in the UK the relationships we have with a large number of our audit clients are now subject to more onerous and complex independence restrictions. It is critical for engagement teams to appropriately consider permissibility of proposed non-audit services and other relationships for our audit clients to ensure compliance with regulation. This is an area of increased regulatory focus and goes right to the heart of KPMG’s quality agenda.

In this interesting and challenging environment, the E&I team is looking to recruit a manager level individual to assist in the provision of high quality advice to engagement teams.

New matters and issues are always emerging, in particular in relation to interpretation of the Revised FRC Ethical Standard so the role will be varied but the role is likely to involve:

- Team consultations – assisting client facing partners and directors with non-audit services queries and formal ethics & independence consultations.
- Independence clearances – taking an SME role with respect to review and sign off of independence clearances for prospective listed (EU PIE) audit clients, supporting engagement teams through this challenging process and providing a valuable contribution to an important part of the audit tender process.
- Sentinel secondary approvals – together with others in the team the individual would take on some responsibility for secondary approvals (as a delegate to the E&I Partner) in Sentinel which will involve liaison at the highest levels with audit partners and engagement teams to understand services and ensure documentation is sufficient and threats and safeguards have been adequately documented.
- Projects- taking on the lead for various projects (as they arise) to respond to AQRT feedback and/or to enhance our processes and overall compliance- by using experience gained in the field, providing practical solutions, driving projects forward and maintaining momentum.
- Training/Communication – deciding how best to increase awareness and drafting communications and guidance and delivering training

Skills and Experience

Applicants should be able to demonstrate experience in the key components of this role:

- Client-focused approach with a passion for delivering excellence
- Strong communication skills – able to question effectively, listen and apply judgement
- Excellent project management skills to deliver high quality work on time.
- Possess an eye for detail as well as an ability to work under pressure.
- Proven ability to build relationships and communicate with people at all levels
- Effective negotiation skills and able to deliver difficult messages
- Ability to take on a high level of responsibility at an early stage
- Ability to handle sensitive/confidential information appropriately

Support will be provided in reaching the required understanding of UK policy and guidance and the underlying regulations.
