Overview
KPMG UK are seeking to hire a Director of Ethics and Independence (“E&I”) team forming part of our Risk & Legal function. The E&I team is responsible for developing and deploying appropriate policy, procedure and guidance on Ethics and Independence to ensure compliance with regulatory and KPMG International requirements, ensuring an adequate programme of communication and training in respect of those policies and procedures is in place and providing guidance and advice to partners and staff on E&I matters.

The Role
This interesting and varied role encompasses a wide range of activities and involves working collaboratively across the team and the wider firm to help manage our relationships with a large number of our audited entities and the work we undertake with them. Given the complex regulatory nature of the market, you’ll be at the heart of providing high quality advice to our client facing engagement teams ensuring our work meets the FRC requirements and our firm commitments around KPMG’s quality agenda. Additionally, you will play a crucial role in relation to interpreting changes and new requirements to the FRC Ethical Standard and managing the impact to the firm.

Day to day activities include:

- Team consultations – dealing with queries from client facing partners and directors on non-audit services and reviewing and approving formal ethics & independence consultations.
- Independence clearances – taking a supervisory role with respect to review and sign-off of independence clearances for prospective listed (PIE) audited entities, supporting engagement leaders through this challenging process and providing a valuable contribution at the most senior levels to an important part of the audit tender process.
- Projects - taking on the lead for various projects to respond to the regulators’ feedback and/or to enhance our processes and overall compliance - by using experience gained in the field, providing practical solutions, driving projects forward and maintaining momentum.
- People – provide performance management to senior managers in the team.
- Skills and Experience Required:
- The role would suit an applicant who had experience of working at Director level in either statutory audit or another regulated business and can demonstrate a good understanding of the requirements of the FRC Ethical Standard and how this shapes the approach to engagement.

The successful candidate would be able to evidence:

- Demonstrable successful track record in operating at a Director / Senior Manager level role within a large-scale organisation either in statutory audit or other regulated business environment.
- Proven ability to build relationships and communicate with people at all levels including the most senior within an organisation
- Prior experience of interpreting regulatory changes (e.g. revisions to FRC Standards) and adapting our practises to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Effective negotiation skills and ability to deliver difficult messages to all grades
- Confident and comfortable to act as a delegate for the Partner where required.
- Leadership and management: Adopts a collaborative and inclusive approach to influence outcomes across a wide stakeholder group.
- Client-focused approach with a passion for delivering excellence
- Demonstrates communication skills – able to question effectively, listen and apply judgement to complex problems
- Project management skills with a track record in delivering high quality work on time.
- Possess an eye for detail as well as an ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to take on a high level of responsibility at an early stage
- Ability to handle sensitive/confidential information appropriately
- Support will be provided in reaching the required understanding of KPMG’s policy and guidance and the underlying regulations.
