Business Architect – B Grade

Role Purpose
The role of the Business Architect is to improve, and create alignment between, the business and technology functions within KPMG to ensure that the Firm can execute its strategy and achieve its primary goals. The Business Architect must therefore have a good understanding of both business and technology strategy and concepts; requirements and designs; their mutual dependencies and impacts on one another; and a good understanding of technology transformation and project management disciplines to create practical and feasible plans that deliver on the Firm’s primary goals. The Business Architect works to develop an integrated view of the enterprise, defining and using coherent frameworks, and repeatable methods and techniques.

Role Responsibilities
Lead and develop team
• Develop team management and leadership skills
• Set clear objectives and goals
• Find the right balance between direction and autonomy, e.g. develop an understanding of when to insist on pace and/or quality vs. allowing team members to discover and experience things for themselves
• Provide coaching to junior members of the team
• Connect with people on a human level, e.g. focus on their wellbeing, motivations and career aspirations
• Inspire people to follow a vision

Core knowledge
• Maintain a high level of knowledge in core areas, incl. design thinking, business capability modelling, process models, value stream mapping, customer & user profiling, journey maps, op model design, etc.
• Maintain a good level of technical knowledge incl. current, emerging and future technology market trends and their impact on the business
• Develop and maintain a good knowledge of KPMG’s technology ecosystem, incl. the main applications and technologies that support KPMG’s Capabilities, e.g. Tax, Audit, etc.
• If required, provide advice to and/or seek to learn from other Member Firms, client teams and/or clients that are seeking to implement or improve their use of specific Business Architecture methods or frameworks

Core tasks
• Work closely with the business and tech functions to create alignment between business and IT; help the business to understand the potential impacts of current, emerging and future technology market trends
• Support the development of technology strategies, responding to and informing the business strategy
• Translate strategy into transformation portfolios, individual initiatives and business cases, incl. operating model impacts
• Advise on options, risks, costs vs. benefits, and impact on other business processes and roadmap priorities
• Apply core Business Architect methods, incl. design thinking, business capability and scenario modelling, process models, etc. to deliver tangible value to the business

Technology governance
• Develop technology risk and control frameworks, individual controls and Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) for technical debt and other technology risks
• Measure and report on technology risks
• Collaborate with the enterprise PMO (Programme Management Office) on the benefits, issues, risks and dependencies of initiatives, and reporting project status
• Help to establish, and participate in, the technology assurance process, ensuring that standards, patterns and reusable components are enforced
• Ensure that business architecture is a key input in the development of other enterprise architecture views

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications
Essential (Business Architecture)
• Proven track record and experience of Business Architecture, incl. business and technology strategies, operating models, process models, business and technology capability models and taxonomies
• Good understanding of design thinking, value stream mapping, customer profiles and journeys, KPIs, risk and control frameworks, and KRIs
• Good knowledge of at least one technology domain, incl. Collaboration & Experience; Automation; Data Science & AI; Data; Integration; Infrastructure / Cloud; Security; and DevSecOps
• A high level of general, technical knowledge incl. current, emerging and future technology market trends and their impact on business
• Good knowledge of architecture governance incl. steps required, e.g. Info Sec approval, conceptual and solution architecture reviews, security assessments, pen tests and service acceptance criteria
• Good understanding of technical debt, incl. its causes, how to measure it, and remedial actions incl. decommissioning
• Must have significant experience in Business Architecture or related roles (e.g. Business Analyst, Process Architect), with demonstrable experience as a BA
• Qualified in ITIL and TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework)

Essential (Other)
• Experience of working with Agile SDLC (Software Development Lifecycle Management) methods
• Understanding of common business analysis techniques and approaches
• Able to explain technical concepts to a non-technical audience in a way that is relevant, easy to consume and compelling
• Good understanding of project management concepts, incl. Gantt charts/plans, risks, assumptions and dependencies, etc.
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Good interpersonal and leadership skills
• Ability to leverage networks in KPMG, e.g. to tap into additional expertise if required
• Comfortable working with ambiguity at the beginning of projects, with ability to provide clarity of direction despite this

• Experience of leading offshore teams
• Practical understanding of GDPR and ISO 27001
• Bachelor’s degree
