Job DescriptionJob Description Roles and Responsibilities

An exciting opportunity for an Assistant Manager has arisen within the UK Operational Taxes Team based in London.

The position is required to support the growing demand from clients across financial services that are impacted by Automatic Exchange of Information requirements (such as the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, FATCA and the Common Reporting Standard, CRS) and the US 'Qualified Intermediary' (QI) rules. This is the primary area of focus; however the successful individual will be encouraged to work on a broad variety of topics, ensuring they develop a varied, challenging and exciting career path.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to be involved in a range of UK and global projects offering great visibility with senior individuals across the UK and beyond.

The team is responsible for providing operational tax advice (withholding and reporting) to KPMG clients in the UK and globally. Some recent examples of projects include:

- Technical tax advisory on complex areas relating to FATCA and CRS regulations.
- US QI compliance reviews and technical advisory.
- Supporting the implementation of AEOI compliance programmes across a number of diverse financial services organisations.
- Benchmarking of tax service providers for large global investors.
- Withholding tax and reporting analysis of cross border transactions, new product offerings and group structures.
- Reviewing operational tax procedures and processes within large financial institutions.

The role is an advisory one, working closely with the rest of the team which is geographically dispersed across the UK.

Key responsibilities will include:

- Helping develop the KPMG business proposition for FATCA, CRS and QI.
- Drafting technical responses to clients on operational taxes questions, particularly around FATCA, CRS and QI.
- Assisting with operational tax advisory and compliance work for a portfolio of clients and working with other specialists to deliver expertise to the market.
- Reviewing and advising on operational tax procedures and processes within large financial institutions.
- Assisting with business development work including attending client events and networking events.
- Creating external communications to update clients on technical developments relating to FATCA, CRS and QI.
- Managing client engagements - billing, invoicing and profitability.
- Learning and developing new skills to broaden your tax knowledge.
- Filing withholding tax reclaims on behalf of funds to recover withholding tax across various EU jurisdictions. Withholding tax and reporting analysis of cross border transactions, new product offerings and group structures
- Keeping up to date with various EU law to ensure clients are kept fully aware of implications on the various withholding tax reclaims filed by fund clients
- Liaise with overseas KPMG offices to prepare appeals where withholding tax reclaims are rejected and assist with potential litigation in overseas EU territories
- Review tax compliance position of funds to ensure filing obligations have been met
- Tax due diligence of private equity, alternative and infrastructure investments considered by funds and advise on the UK and overseas tax implications
- Being involved on tax advisory and planning work on their client portfolio and working with specialists to deliver expertise to the local market
- Forming a key part of the tax client service team on a number of our regional financial services clients (e.g. challenger banks, building societies) and working closely with other consultants and the managers/senior managers to ensure the client receives an excellent level of service.
- Helping to prepare first drafts of corporation tax advisory work for financial services clients and working with more senior members of the team to finalise the advice.
- Where appropriate, working alongside other members of the team in a tax audit role to ensure tax numbers in statutory accounts are robust and supportable and also preparing such numbers for non-audit clients.
- Helping develop the KPMG business proposition for the US Qualified Intermediary and the Automatic Exchange of Information requirements (FATCA and CRS) and operational taxes more broadly
- Drafting technical responses to clients on operational taxes questions. Assisting with operational tax advisory and compliance work for a portfolio of clients and working with other specialists to deliver expertise to the market
- Reviewing and advising on operational tax procedures and processes within large financial institutions
- Being the principal contact with smaller clients on day to day tax matters and working with senior managers and managers on larger clients
- Coaching and developing junior members of staff
- Assisting with business development work including attending client events and networking events.

The Individual

The operational taxes team is growing fast so we are seeking an individual who can contribute to this growth and is able to thrive in a dynamic environment whilst managing a diverse workload. Important attributes of the successful candidate include:

- Attention to detail and strong communication skills: Ability to read, interpret and communicate detailed technical information. A key value of our team is the ability to take technical tax developments and translate them into clear and practical communications. Staying up to date with technical details in a fast moving environment is vital.
- Strong interpersonal skills: The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a variety of team members and senior individuals across the global firm. There is also likely to be considerable client interaction. The ability to gain credibility with senior stakeholders quickly is critical.
- Highly motivated: The team is busy and growing fast, we therefore need team members at all levels to be able to independently push projects forward and look for ways to improve the service we give to clients.
- Project management: Much of our work is project based where a discrete piece of work needs to be produced. This often involves coordination of individuals across the global organisation to deliver clear and cohesive solutions to clients.
- Highly organised: Delivering high quality work to tight deadlines, often with competing priorities is the norm and the successful individual will need to be able to balance these priorities to ensure deadlines are met without compromising quality and client service.
- A commercial approach to resolving issues and providing advice
- High level analytical skills
- History of developing strong client relationships
- Project co-ordination/management skills and the ability to identify and pursue business opportunities
- Strong inter-personal skills
- High level of drive and enthusiasm with a positive attitude
- Ability and willingness to keep up to date technically and a continuous desire to seek feedback and improve.
- CTA, CA, ACA or ACCA or equivalently qualified
No previous operational tax experience is necessary, but the individual must be keen to learn and demonstrate the ability to understand and communicate detailed technical tax information.
