The Claims and Incentives team are part of our wider Corporate Tax department. They help our clients to secure cash tax savings through government sponsored tax reliefs and incentives. The team is made up of Fixed Asset Tax Services (“FATS”) and Innovation Reliefs & Incentives (“IRI”) and supports clients who incur expenditure on fixed assets and carry out innovative activities. The FATS team is made up of tax advisers, accountants and surveyors and reviews fixed asset costs such as expenditure incurred on the construction of property to enhance and accelerate the available tax relief wherever possible. They also help clients on their processes to capture data in relation to fixed assets and have developed technology tools to assist with this process.


Within IRI staff work with clients to help them claim tax incentives for innovation. The IRI team works with companies of all sizes from almost every sector of the economy to identify their qualifying R&D activity, quantify it and help them obtain their R&D incentives, as well as working with clients to best leverage the Patent Box regime. The team consists of staff with a wide variety of skill sets all working together, from technical specialist including scientists, engineers and IT experts to fully qualified accountants and tax advisers. The teams are spread over the UK to best meet our clients’ needs and the national team all work together as one unit. Job Description
The Team


KPMG’s Claims & Incentives (‘C&I’) team is looking to expand with the appointment of Managers to be based in Glasgow, Edinburgh or Aberdeen and specialising in R&D Incentives. The team works with businesses from almost every sector of the economy to help identify their qualifying R&D activities, quantify the level of eligible costs and ultimately agree their claims with HMRC.

The Role


Roles and Responsibilities

- Prepare summary descriptions of the work being undertaken within complex projects in straightforward language that is clear to understand to be submitted to the HMRC.
- Work with HMRC specialists to facilitate the agreement of R&D claims.
- Manage client claim projects and to manage conflicting resourcing requirements between projects.
- Leading by example in terms of client relationships, technical quality and service delivery
- Work with senior staff at our clients to identify qualifying projects and expenditure.
- Deliver comprehensive proposals and taking part in presentations
- Leading complex projects
- Leading people including coaching and developing junior staff.
- Build an internal network within the wider tax practice of the firm
- Help to establish and maintain strong client relationships with both existing and new clients

These positions can be full time or we can acccomodate part-time and flexible working arrangements

The Person


For these roles we can consider people who fall into one 3 categories: Tax Specialists, Science and Engineering Specialists or IT Technology Specialists

Below are details of what we would look for in each:

Tax Specialist

Experience and Background

- Previous R&D tax experience, ideal but not essential as training can be provided
- Relevant degree in science, engineering would be a great asset to have
- Someone currently working in a client facing role would be ideal but this is not essential

Skills and Qualifications

- Part or fully qualified tax professional CA, CTA, ATT or other relevant tax/accounting background
- Competent in the use of MS excel and the manipulation of big data
• Comfortable leading and project managing delivery of projects and reporting to key internal/external stakeholders
- Ability to analyse tax legislation and apply these principles to real life scenarios and be comfortable documenting the filing position in written reports for clients and HMRC
- Experience with corporate tax is desired but not essential

Science/Engineering Specialist

Experience and Background

- Passionate about science, engineering and technology
- Someone who is looking to make a change of career – moving away from practical work to move high level understanding of science/technology in a broad range of sectors
- Previous R&D tax experience ideal but not essential as training will be provided

Skills and Qualifications

- Relevant degree in physical sciences, engineering (eg Bsc. BEng – Masters degrees or PhD in Science/Engineering also relevant)
• Excellent report writing, communication, interviewing and presentation skills
- Ability to clearly translate complex scientific/engineering principles involved in clients projects into a format that is easily understood by a non-technical reader
- Builds rapport and trust quickly with senior client stakeholders to quickly document project activities
- Competent in the use of MS Excel and manipulation of big data
- Comfortable leading and project managing delivery of projects and reporting to key internal/external stakeholders

IT Technology Specialist

Experience and Background

- Passionate about science, engineering and technology
- Someone who is looking to make a change of career – moving away from practical work to move high level understanding of science/technology in a broad range of sectors
- Previous R&D tax experience ideal but not essential as training will be provided

Skills and Qualifications

- Relevant degree in software engineering, development or computer science. Masters degrees or PhD in these areas also relevant
- Excellent report writing, communication, interviewing and presentation skills
- Ability to clearly translate complex scientific/engineering principles involved in clients projects into a format that is easily understood by a non-technical reader
- Builds rapport and trust quickly with senior client stakeholders to quickly document project activities
- Competent in the use of MS Excel and manipulation of big data
- Comfortable leading and project managing delivery of projects and reporting to key internal/external stakeholders
