Job Description
KPMG’s Stamp Taxes Group is composed of eight full-time individuals from a range of backgrounds that collectively have over 80 years’ experience in the subject. Spread within four regions but with a London hub, it is part of the Real Estate & Infrastructure Group, which itself is part of the Financial Services Tax Group. It provides specialist advisory services on all six UK stamp taxes (stamp duty, stamp duty land tax, stamp duty reserve tax, annual tax on enveloped dwellings, land transaction tax and land and buildings transaction tax) on transactions in land, shares and securities. The team works alongside the firm’s clients, their lawyers and colleagues in different tax groups providing advice on, amongst other things, real estate and corporate acquisitions, real estate and corporate restructuring, tax due diligence, corporate reconstructions (including mergers and demergers) and capital markets matters. The group was a finalist in the Taxation Awards for Best Big Four Tax Group.

The successful candidate will develop a deep specialism in stamp taxes, applying this knowledge in the context of the real estate and infrastructure, investment management, private client and private equity industries to give outstanding value-added advice to clients. He or she will initially support the rest of the stamp taxes team and be required to travel to Leeds, Manchester and London, as needed. A particular focus is expected to be stamp duty and stamp duty reserve tax on transactions in shares and securities.

Key Responsibilities

The role predominantly involves delivering advisory services. This may include:

- Helping with ad hoc advisory questions
- Being the first point of contact for clients, both from outside and within the firm, developing relationships with those individuals
- Ensuring all risk procedures are adhered to
- Carrying out detailed technical research
- Providing advice on a wide range of transactions
- Understanding the client’s business and helping to identify areas for the provision of tax and other services
- Being involved in business development and proposal activity
- Delivering presentations and technical training to other tax groups internally

Qualifications and Skills

The successful candidate will have the following skills and qualifications:
- Strong inter-personal skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong analytical skills
- Ability to think creatively to solve problems, often under pressure
- Ability to work as part of a team in a transaction based environment
- Strong task management skills
- Ability to build client relationships
- Obsessive attention to detail
- Forensic attitude to uncovering and understanding the facts
- Highly motivated, enthusiastic and committed to specialise to a deep level at an early stage

And either a–

• Law degree (2.1 or above) or Common Professional Exam, or
- An accounting qualification, such as AAT, or
- Background within HMRC
A general awareness of the UK tax system (including stamp taxes) would be an advantage but is not a requirement.
