A constantly changing and increasingly high-profile field, International and Complex UK Tax can offer an exciting broad range of quality career paths to ambitious people. Working in the International and Complex UK Tax business at KPMG will give you the opportunity to develop relationships with clients assisting them with all their strategic tax requirements. This involves working with clients to produce complex tax computations and returns for HM Revenue & Customs, giving advice on corporate planning and restructuring projects both in the UK and Internationally.

With offices across the UK, we work with everyone from small start-ups and individuals to major multinationals, in virtually every industry imaginable. Our work is often complex, yet our vision is simple: to be the clear choice for our clients, for our people and for the communities we work in.

Job Description
The KPMG regional Financial Services Corporate Tax team is a fast growing part of the KPMG tax practice. We are looking for excellent candidates who are seeking a dynamic and challenging working environment within a strong supportive leadership team.

Whilst the role is within the financial services team, having previous experience of working in financial services or working on financial services clients is not required as the successful candidate will be trained on relevant areas of tax specialisation (e.g. loan relationship legislation) and wider industry issues as required. Candidates who enjoy working in the area of Treasury Tax are likely to find the role of interest.

The role would be Birmingham based, and would involve primarily working with Corporate Tax Senior Managers based in Birmingham and Leeds. There would also be the opportunity to work with other team members across the UK. KPMG has financial services tax professionals based in several regional offices including Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, and Bristol as well as London. The wider regional financial services tax team also includes specialists from indirect taxes, operational taxes and reward taxes and the role would allow for interaction with these other areas of tax so the candidate obtains experience of areas outside their core corporate tax responsibilities. The marketplace is diverse with a client and target base of challenger banks, building societies, wealth managers, insurance groups and other companies operating in the sector. The ownership structures are also diverse with clients including UK listed groups, PE backed groups, mutuals and inbound and outbound organisations.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter with a good level of core corporate tax technical knowledge and a confident outward facing skillset willing to invest time and effort in the marketplace. We would consider candidates in existing Manager level roles or ambitious Assistant Managers who are looking for career advancement.

Being a relatively small team there will be the opportunity to work directly with the Partner and Director group to give exposure to different issues and types of work. Also, due to the growth of the team there are excellent promotion opportunities and therefore there is a clear pathway for rapid advancement if the candidate is looking to grow and develop their career over the coming years.

Roles and Responsibilities

The role involves a mix of tax advisory services and compliance management. This will include:

- Ensuring that client work is managed and delivered effectively.
- Developing and maintaining good client relationships, identifying leads for new work, liaising with other members of the client service team outside tax.
- Identifying work opportunities through an internal network of contacts.
- Helping to develop more junior staff in the team.
- Driving the tax advice on a wide range of projects.
- Managing teams and coaching and developing staff.
- Ensuring all risk procedures are adhered to.
- Liaising with other colleagues in tax and elsewhere to provide a complete tax service to clients.
- As a manager you will work closely with senior managers, directors and partners on a wide range of projects and a portfolio of clients.
- The role will, at times, involve being part of a ‘virtual team’ – working with team members based in different offices (for example working alongside our compliance centre of excellence to manage the tax return submission process).

Qualifications and Skills

- Qualified CTA or ACA/CA or equivalent with a reasonable amount of post qualification experience.
- Strong knowledge of UK corporate tax and an awareness of other tax and accounting areas. Previous experience within the financial services sector would be an advantage but is not a requirement.
- Tax Accounting experience.
- Experience of managing a team/other team members.
- Experience of team working.
- You should have an ability to communicate effectively at all levels (internally and externally) and be a team worker.
- You should also possess sound judgement, including the ability to identify and evaluate risk issues and know when to involve others.
- Strong interpersonal skills are required in addition to strong oral and written communication skills
- High level analytical skills and a commercial approach to resolving issues and providing advice.
- Ability to use appropriate technology to facilitate being part of a virtual team.
- Ability to multi-task.
